Sustainable Blooms at Perth Town Hall

Kate and Ricky tied the knot in the heart of Perth surrounded by their Cypriot & Sicilian families. Their day was the perfect mix of elegance and tradition blended with sustainability and stunning blooms.

Read on to see how a minor medical emergency on their first date led to the wedding of their dreams ..

Tell us about your love story (and this minor medical emergency!)

Ricky and I met online and had our first date at a restaurant in Hillarys. It was Monday and, of course, everything in Perth closes so early! After a few drinks and chatting away for a few hours, we decided to take a walk on the board walk. I took my heels off as the board walk was quite old and after 2 steps I got a very large splinter in my foot! I tried to get it out but couldn't reach it so Ricky offered. As soon as it was out, I bled everywhere! I keep a First aid kit in my car so we hobbled off there. He tried to carry me but I declined. He did, however, help to clean and bandage my foot - much to my chagrin. After we had cleaned it, he grabbed me and kissed me!

Did you incorporate any special traditions to your day?

Ricky and I both really wanted our cultures to be featured in our day and to share these traditions with our family and friends. Ricky is Cypriot Greek, so we had a plate smash at a friend's bar with our bridal party during our bridal portraits. It was such a fun moment and we loved being able to share that with our dearest! I am Sicilian and one of the things I loved most about the weddings I went to as a child was watching the bride and groom being circled by the family matriarchs and wrapped in paper ribbons. Seeing the couple 'joined' by their families and loved ones was so special and we wanted to incorporate that into our day. We sourced biodegradable paper streamers too!

Let’s talk planning - Did you have a plan of attack?

Ricky and I wanted to ensure that our day was a big party with lots of fun elements; a confetti toss at the ceremony, a Piaggio Bar and Oyster shucker during cocktail hour; homemade cocktails for our reception. We wanted to source local and support our friends and family members in the industry. This was the key factor in most of our decision making - Is it local? Is it Sustainable? Does is support our friends and family?

Why was sustainability so important to you for your wedding?

Ricky and I are very big on sustainability in our own lives and finding vendors with the same ethos was incredibly important to us. Ricky and I compost, garden, shop at bulk food stores, recycle, volunteer in the community and try to always act in ways that protects the environment for our children and our future.

What was your vision for the day and how did you choose your style?

Given that it was going to be a large European wedding (Cypriot/Sicilian), both Ricky and I wanted our feel and styling to be simple and classic. We went for a clean colour palate that included tonal greens, whites and creams and featured that throughout the day. We kept our styling simple and focussed on accents rather than excess.

What drew you to Miller Rose Botanic?

Miller Rose was my first choice of florist and after meeting Tahnee I knew we were the right fit. Miller Roses focus on sustainability and giving back to the community, which was so important for Ricky and I. The fact that she was also lovely and easy to work with, helpful in creating our vision and supported us in our planning was a bonus!

Favourite moment from you wedding?

Seeing my soon-to-be husband as I got to the end of the aisle and having our dog be a part of our bridal portraits!

We are so glad we…

Took the time to enjoy ourselves in every aspect!

Any advice for future couples?

Be kind to yourselves and don't stress. Everyone will try to give you advice but remember - it is your day.
